Fabric decoration techniques, making your own appliques

Today is the first post in our fabric decoration techniques serie. And I just want to give a special welcome to our first Naaikrans 2.0 members, nice to have you over here on my blog!
Today's topic is making your own appliques. There are a lot of great tutorials out there, so I'm not giving a step by step explanation. Our main purpose is to give you an idea and get the creativity flowing to join our January sew along.  If you like this technique and need some more help, I used this tutorial.

I decided to combine the fun with the necessary, the pile of pants that need mending is growing daily, boys will be boys after all. So I made applications I could use on the holes in their jeans. I started with some heavy woven fabric, interfacing and  shapes big enough to cover the holes.

Ironing on the interfacing and cutting the shape out of the fabric is easy and quick, the shape feels sturdy because of the interfacing and won't start fraying. Because the legs on the pants were to narrow I couldn't use my machine and had to sew the shapes on by hand. To keep them in place I first used some fabric glue.

Since I was on a roll I managed to reduce my mending staple.
